Herb works as a butcher and brings leftovers home to make ends meet for himself and his wife, who desperately wants a child. To try and get ahead, Herb gambles on dogfights, but forever stands on the wrong side of the wager. With a staggering mob debt and a wife insisting on a family, Herb gets news that an abandoned child will soon join the household. The child, found on the street by the police, carries Herb's name and phone number in a note pinned to his coat. With another mouth to feed, Herb's takes larger bets, and larger losses. When collectors arrive to call in the note, Herb cannot afford to pay. When pressed, it becomes clear the most valuable thing in his life, is an anonymous boy. A boy that is worth more his organs than he is alive. A boy that no one would miss. Except his wife.
